Brandon history
The name comes from John Brandon
who settled the community in the 1850s. Then in 1890
the railroad arrived, and 145 years later the growth
was spurred by the appearance of the giant Westfield
Brandon Mall. The population grew from 1,655 residents
in 1960 (the first year a census was taken of Brandon)
to 77,895 in 2000. The geographic boundaries have grown
as well, with the surrounding towns of Lithia, Seffner,
Mango and Dover now considered part of Brandon area.
Brandon is an unincorporated community
with Hillsborough County providing Brandon's police
and fire protection as well as other governmental services.
The average home prices went up from $50,000 twenty
years ago when many retirees and military families of
MacDill Air Force Base were moving into the area to
about $300,000 now - and million dollar homes are not
too uncommon.
