How New Tampa got started
For many years Bruce B. Downs Boulevard
has been known as a "road to nowhere" until Denver developer
Ken Good came to town in 1980s with a vision of a neighborhood
like no other. In 1985 he convinced the local government
to annex the land marking the largest annexation in
Tampa's history. Tampa Palms was then developed, and
its popularity spurred the development of other master-planned
communities:
Hunter's Green,
Pebble Creek,
Arbor Greene,
Cross Creek and later
Richmond Place,
West Meadows,
Cory Lake Isles,
Grand Hampton and others. In 1993 business leaders
formed the Northeast Area Council and named the area
New Tampa giving it identity while tying it to Tampa
proper. Today the organization is known as New Tampa
Community Council.
New Tampa now
New Tampa's short history makes
it one of the youngest communities in Tampa Bay area.
Large trees line the streets with wild birds walking
on the grass, and you will not see any billboards or
trailer parks driving through the streets. Instead you
will see active residents jogging or biking on sidewalks,
and numerous shopping centers and restaurants including
Stonewood, Red Lobster, Romano's Macaroni Grill, Panera
Bread, and many others. New stores and restaurants are
constantly being built to meet the demand of fast growth:
BJ's Wholesale Club is one of the recent additions.
Home prices for single family homes are typically between
$200K to $400K.
