Ballast Point in South Tampa Florida
Once a sprawling
expanse of land outside the city limits with few homes
and even fewer paved roads,
Ballast Point has come a long way since the 1920's.
In its early days, Ballast Point was a secluded haven
"where the oaks meet the bay" for Florida's elite. When
the opening of Gandy Bridge in 1924 shaved 50 miles
off of the commute between Pinellas and Hillsborough
counties, the Ballast Point area became popular as a
getaway. Florida's real estate boom in the 1920's also
aided in the area's development. Although the Great
Depression slowed, even halted, growth for some time,
Ballast Point continued to prove itself as a desirable
location, and it was annexed by Tampa in 1953.
With the construction
of MacDill Field in the 50's, the area also saw economic
and industrial growth. The community now boasts both
elegant historic homes and amazing renovations. Homes
in Ballast Point feature large porches reminiscent of
old Florida, and residents continue to enjoy their easy
access to downtown. Living in this community is certainly
a source of pride for its residents, who make great
efforts to keep an eye on new developments and ensure
that none of Ballast Point's historic value and charm
is affected by the area's "comeback." Waterfront homes
abound in this peaceful little community, which features
several local restaurants and a community park. The
community pier is currently being renovated, and residents
also have access to the Tampa Yacht and Country Club.
With home prices ranging from the $200's to over $2
million, this bayside community has something to offer
for any homebuyer's taste.
